Luigi’s Audition

fortdoberdale.com Posted on September 23, 2011 by HelenMay 9, 2017

Luigi and I went to Telemundo NBC studios on Tuesday.  Why?  Because Luigi had an audition for a Spanish language soap opera.  Luigi is a ham, and his ham-ness came out on Tuesday, too.  Thankfully.  He walked onto the lot as if he owned it.  He made friends with those who were up to it.  He loves people.  Some people were afraid of him.  One man in particular pet Luigi on the rump twice and as soon as Luigi turned around to sniff his hand, the man jerked it away.  Not particularly a good thing to do, but Luigi didn’t care.  He’s super easy.

The audition itself was, “Ok walk around with the dog on leash.  Then take the leash off and put it on the chair.  Do a sit and down, and paw shake.   Afterwards, tell your dog to get his leash off the chair and bring it to you.”  The man sat on the floor to film Luigi’s work.

So the first thing I had to figure out was how would I get Luigi to give me his paw.  I don’t recollect teaching him that.  I’m not into that trick because I get slapped with paws as it is, and I didn’t want to encourage it by teaching it.  That’s where I went wrong, by the way.  Luigi also didn’t know how to speak a couple weeks ago, but he needed to speak for the audition.  I reluctantly taught him to speak.  But then I realized I had to teach him not to speak, too.  Once he understood both the on and off buttons for speak, it worked out very well.  So perhaps I can teach him an off button for the paw trick, too.

When I started walking, I was figuring out my strategy and the man said, “At some point you’re going to have to take off his leash.”  Ooops!  I forgot about that.  So I took it off, and heeled him around the stage.  We were on a wood laminated floor with two spot lights on us.  I wanted to get that paw thing out of the way, so I had Luigi sit, and I reached out and told him to give me his paw.  Then he lifted one paw up, Saints preserve us!, but his other paw slid and both paws slid and he was having trouble maintaining stability on the floor.  So that’s when I stuck my foot in front of his paw and he lifted up his paw and I grabbed it.  I smiled and moved onto the next exercise.  I heeled him around, had him come front and finished the recall.  I had him sit and speak and down and speak.  His sit and speak was funny.  He spoke as if her were trying to get his motor going.  I heard the 3 people in the room laugh.

That reminds me, when I came into the room with Luigi, one woman behind the table grabbed her chair and held it up to Luigi like a lion tamer.  He ignored her.  No comment from my side.

He spoke better, or more like a Doberman, when he spoke from the down position.  I also did a touch and Luigi did a nice high and hard smoosh of the nose right on my palm.   When it came time for getting his leash off the chair, I told them I brought a toy he could fetch off the chair instead.  The cameraman agreed, and I put Luigi in a sit and told him to stay then I walked over to the other side of the room to get the Cuz ball.  I heard them muttering over his good stay.  I was very proud of Luigi myself.  He had his eye on me the whole time.  The treats I had surely had something to do with that, but so did our close relationship.

I came back to him, gave him a treat and put the ball on the chair.  That’s when I told him to get the toy, and he did.  Then he brought the toy to me and spat it on the floor at my feet.  I should have told him to pick it up, but instead, I did, and tossed it to him.  He grabbed it from the air and then decided to take off out of the room to go look for some people to play ball with him.  As soon as he was at the exit, I called him back and he recalled beautifully.  He was very impressive and I was so happy about his performance.

On our way out, the lion tamer took our phone number, and I took Luigi’s photo.  There had been a Weim before me and following me was an Aussie.  Then as we exited the building, there were two Goldens arriving.  Prior to the Weim were two Rotties.  I have not heard anything as to their decision.  I hope they at least notify our talent agent so she can announce who they picked.  It would be a lot of fun to work with Luigi in a soap opera.  But the audition itself was a blast; except for the drive over to Miami at rush hour, which was another story.

P.S.  Luigi’s collar was made by Lisa at Collar Mania.

New Designs

fortdoberdale.com Posted on September 8, 2011 by HelenSeptember 4, 2011

Designed by The Termite.  It is a shirt I got from the company I worked for during the last 10 years.  They gave them to us to wear when we did a walk for cancer.  There was a woman in our group who had cancer.  She was always so vivacious.  Till cancer finished her.  I received phone calls from her when she checked in for the last several weeks she was off “on vacation,” and each one was with a voice that got weaker and weaker until the last one when I could barely hear her.  That was the one she admitted she wasn’t doing too well.  Up until then, she was fighting.

She has gone to a better place.  She had a beautiful funeral service by people who loved her and now she is free.  I still have a plant from her.  It’s been 6 or 7 years.  It’s in a pot in my back yard, and I think it’s time to repot it.

Well, my shirt was redesigned by The Termite in one of her moments of inspiration.  More indication, I believe, that it’s time for change.

The Neighborhood

fortdoberdale.com Posted on September 5, 2011 by HelenSeptember 4, 2011

I remember a time in my life, not so long ago, when I could sit and enjoy the end of the day out in my back yard.  That was before this obscene change in the economy.  Now the neighborhood’s changed, and sitting outside amongst the sounds of nature has turned into sitting outside listening to the sounds of certain renters who’ve gotten into houses bought up by slum lords around the neighborhood.  There is an absolute disregard from certain of these slum lords and renters for the neighborhood or the neighbor.   No longer can I be guaranteed a spot in my back yard to enjoy.  The soft sounds of nature and even the background noise of the highway are overtaken by screaming, unattended children, cars cruising around with radios so loud and base so low, it’s deafening.  Even when in the house, these sounds permeate through the walls and disturb my own peace inside my own house.

I miss my peace and time to sit with my dogs at the end of the day.  I miss neighbors who care enough to offer a wave or a smile back to me.  Those are the kind of neighbors I grew up with.  Instead, I’m face with people living in the same vicinity who don’t even look my way when we pass, or if they do it’s with a piercing aggressive stare or to spit on the ground as if to make some comment about who they are and who they think I am.

Perhaps it’s time for change.  With a much prayed for miracle, I would do that.

Here is my boy in his new collar. He’s a SuperHam! What a guy. I love him to pieces.

A friend of mine also suggest Super Hamsome, which is also cute!
Thanks Kat, for that one.

Not a Toad

fortdoberdale.com Posted on August 27, 2011 by HelenFebruary 18, 2019

This morning the dog was barking at my trap. I’m trying to catch the bufo toad that I’ve been hearing in the corner of the back yard, but that’s not what I caught.

This baby possum got caught instead. She was not happy about it either. I propped the trap against my shed, undid the lock on the side that pointed to the fence, and in a short while, the trap was empty. I’m hoping she found her mom.  “Hi mom!  I’m home!”  I’m so glad I didn’t catch a rat. Those I have to relocate.

On another note, here is a picture of the neon tabs I have in the ground wrapped around my weave pole nails.  The first one is easy to see.  There are four of them.

Little Things

fortdoberdale.com Posted on August 25, 2011 by HelenFebruary 18, 2019

This morning, before work, I had to bathe Mimi. She stunk! Though it was a little hard to find her. She blends into everything so well when she wants to hide from something like the camera. Not so much a bath, but give her time. She’ll learn to hide from that too. She is the queen of neurotic and apparently everything’s out to get her.

So I filled up what I now call the Border Collie Bathtub with water and a little too much dishwashing soap. She was slipping and sliding. Actually, she was way taller than I thought, and this only got her legs wet. Being she wouldn’t lie down, I had to do the deed and flip her sideways. She didn’t go under, but she got nice and wet, which is hard to do with just the hose.  All I had to do was suds her up! I still added more shampoo, and rinsed her off, all in the middle of a mild rain storm from Hurricane Irene and within the ten minutes I gave myself. It was an ordeal, but we beat the clock.  Having this storage bin work out this way was a very nice surprise.

After work, I finally set up my 2 x 2 weaves. I have these 8″ nails which needed to be staked into the ground. (I couldn’t find the nine inch ones anywhere Jennifer D’Onfrio.) The reason I hate setting these weavers up is because the ground is like a rock quary. So after I got these holes made, I decided to leave the nails there in the ground when I picked up the 2 x 2’s, and put some flourescent tags on them so I don’t trip over them.  This will make them easy to find when I want to use them next time.  On the next trip to Home Depot, I will have to get some of those small flourescent flags to put next to them, so I can really see them.

Meanwhile, Raven did very well weaving.  I did learn something.  She has such a low frustration level, that she even quits looking for a big chunky treat when she can’t find it in dirt right off the bat.  I think a nose work class may be in her future.   Or in our backyard!

The big thing in training with her today was indeed that she drove ahead and at least looked for the big chunky treat once.  Then we went back to find it, but I need her to drive ahead and not flip back to look for me.  Little things mean a lot in agility.

Good Night Irene

fortdoberdale.com Posted on August 24, 2011 by HelenMay 9, 2017

We’re happy that Hurricane Irene didn’t hit us, but praying for the Bahamas that they stay safe through the storm.

It’s a little strange outside. There are winds blowing and they sound like the stray winds of a hurricane, and not the average everyday wind. They are more powerful sounding even though they aren’t anywhere near the center of the storm where all the rough weather is. Tomorrow shall be interesting. I didn’t pull my palms off their chair stands, and I hope I don’t regret that overnight. I’ll revisit that decision in the morning, hoping it’s not pouring.

One crazy thing that happened is that Mimi has saturated herself in her own urine in her crate today. This dog can step outside and sniff the air and knows there is a storm nearby. She is a little out of herself tonight, very quiet in the house but out in the back yard after dinner she was busy walking around looking for poop to eat. Yes, indeed. She’s a gem! Of course, I’m the one who’s exhausted after bathing her and her crate and under and behind it. But she’s napping, and she still stinks! I sprayed her with XO and will submerge her in a bubble bath as soon as I get a chance. Hoping for tomorrow if there aren’t rains. In the meantime, the XO and bath did help, but the smell is still there. Such a sensitive weather predicting soul.

Peace

fortdoberdale.com Posted on August 23, 2011 by HelenAugust 23, 2011

Guess what came in the mail today. Yep. A new collar. I love this collar. Of course, I love them all.

The collar maker made a mistake the first time through and put the peace signs upside down. So when she corrected it, the d-ring and tag clip ended up on the “wrong” side. But as I thought about it, this side works much better for those of us who like to have our dogs walk on the traditional side – the left side of us. So the leash is connected to the d-ring which is right next to the handler’s left leg. It works out perfectly!

Looking at the picture, though, makes something tickle in my head. I know it’s “wrong” so my brain is trying to fix it. This reminded me of well over 15 years ago when I wore a watch. (I don’t anymore.) But I used to wear it on my left wrist. Then one day, I put it on my right wrist. I was so disoriented wearing that watch on the “wrong” wrist all day. It was just amazing. The brain gets comfortable with certain things, and changing them can make it spin its own engines.

As usual, visit Collar Mania if you want a collar of your own. Tell her Helen sent you.

Peace be with you.

Class Tonight

fortdoberdale.com Posted on August 22, 2011 by HelenAugust 23, 2011

Raven was fantastic in class tonight.  I took only her, and worked her on some crate games 15 minutes before class began.  Then we tugged and she offered her new trick, sit on her back end like she’s begging.  I was surprised at that one!  I showed her that yesterday just for an exercise.  She brought it up on her own tonight.

Tonight’s we were reminded to support what we ask for.  When we ask our dogs to do something, we should be there to support them while they’re doing them.  One of my big lessons of the night was when I sent Raven ahead of me 3 jumps and then asked her to weave.  I knew she wouldn’t do that weave thing.  I was praying for a miracle when I sent her.  Then I was reminded by the instructor not to ask a dog to do something she hasn’t learned.  Raven knows how to weave, mostly, but I haven’t sent her out to weave.  And also, she only weaves when I’m with her.   Weaves are on our list of things to expand.

We also did a lesson on calling our dogs across a jump so they end up at our sides. We practiced one run full of serpentines.  A funny thing happened.  Raven would not take the second jump on most of the serpentines I did with her.  And I realized the first time I didn’t cue her with the word, “Hup.”  I haven’t taught her to take jumps without a verbal.   So it was totally my fault she wouldn’t take the middle jump. I didn’t “Hup” when I should have.

Something like that happened at an agility trial when I was running Leissl.  I couldn’t understand why she wasn’t jumping.  Then after the run, I realized I said, “Here” over each and every jump.  That’s not the cue I use for jump.  “Hup” is.  “Here” means come to me.  So of course she was confused.  She mostly sniffed the ground on that run.  I don’t think I had that one recorded, but I do remember it.

So this week, I learned a lot.  What I took out of class was I have to practice serpentines especially the middle jump, and weave entries, and doing all twelve weaves.  And bringing her to my side, still working on that.  Practice perfection and practice imperfection. And to keep doing the pre-class warm-up with crate games and tugging.  This seems to help the maniac in Raven particularly.

I was so pleased with Raven tonight.  She didn’t run off once.  Did I mention that?  I’m also very happy with this class.  The instructor is outstanding.  She knows how to break portions of a bigger exercise up and hand it to us so we can handle what we are facing.  She really knows her stuff and more so, she knows how to teach it.  Teaching is a gift like anything else, and just because you know stuff doesn’t mean you know how to teach stuff.  But this woman has both the knowing and the teaching down.  And she has a dog I just adore!  A cute blue merle Border Collie, blue eyes, and a total toy fetish.  Such a doll.

No rain tonight either!  Perfect fun.  And Awesome Paws handling system is sounding more and more attractive to me!
